Before going to college, I was a 100% nerd. I had no idea what it is like to have barbecue, camping and student activities. Even though I started joining the events of Student Association of my department with the guidance of my fellow senior schoolmates, I didn't really like what I was doing and a lot of things I did were out of a personal favor. I remembered I was in charge of contacting all alumni. One time, when we had to organize a major event for all of them, our mid-terms happened to be around the same time. Therefore, a professor instructed me to send more than 1,000 letters to all alumni as no one else was willing to give a hand. Unexpectedly, the chairman of the department was stuck in South Africa so I had to send out another 1,000+ letters to inform all alumni of cancellation. Then I did the same thing for the third time when the chairman finally made his way back and confirmed the date. Of course, this back-and-forth process almost drove me crazy. However, now I am able to recognize the names of these alumni whenever I have a chance to exchange name cards with them at work because I remembered their names, where they work, their positions and year of graduation. Ostensibly I have shortened the distance with them thanks to this experience.
Many professors who know me for years believed that I should develop my career in academic fields. I myself thought so too. However, I drifted away from the ivory tower due to some spur-of-the-moment words I spitted out of anger so I stepped into the business fields for the next 20 years since then. After obtaining the master degree in National Taiwan University, I started working in the Research Center of Food Industry Development without trying too hard. The goal of the research and development aims at assisting companies in this industry. At that time, we had a quite successful case. Therefore, when we briefed to a company, we hoped to transfer the technologies smoothly. However, we encountered several setbacks. When we were able to achieve 6% production, our client requested 8%. And when we finally accomplished 8%, the client demanded 10%. At the end of the day, the deal was off. My professor (als |
